Expert advice for Executive (CEO/VP)
1
Guard 2 hours of uninterrupted thinking time each day as non-negotiable.
2
Make fewer, higher-quality decisions by batching decision-making time.
3
Delegate everything that doesn't require your unique judgment.
4
Spend time weekly with frontline employees to stay connected to reality.
5
Protect time for strategic thinking — it's your highest-leverage activity.
In this template the day runs 06:00–17:00: a morning routine before the first meeting, about 4 hours of meetings (leadership team or 1:1s, board, investor or client meetings, department reviews), a 2-hour block of uninterrupted strategic thinking from 09:00, and about 2.5 hours for the metrics review, talent, and written communication. In a Harvard Business School study of 27 CEOs (Porter and Nohria, 2018), meetings took 72% of their work time, so the thinking block is scheduled first.
Treat a daily thinking block as a fixed appointment — this template keeps 09:00–11:00 for strategic planning and critical decisions — and add one meeting-free morning a week. Batch decisions into set times, delegate anything that does not need your judgment, and share decisions in writing so fewer meetings are needed to pass them on.
